Site connects farmers, ranchers, rural people
Farmers, ranchers and country folks are building new families and creating treasured holiday memories after discovering love on FarmersOnly.com, an online dating site meant just for them.
Richard Nichols, 64, was a widower for more than two years. A fifth generation cowboy who grew up on a ranch in New Mexico, Richard was traveling across the country when he was "double-dog-dared" by a friend in Wyoming to create a profile on FarmersOnly. After searching the country's largest and fastest-growing rural-focused dating site, Richard found Carla from Kansas. Carla grew up on a farm and works in the agricultural industry at a retail outlet.
"I didn't want a cleaning lady or a cook," says Richard. "Carla's my buddy and my best friend. I tried all the rest and didn't meet the right type of people. "
What makes FarmersOnly different? "It's just so honest and down to earth" Richard says. "The people on the sight aren't into playing games. They are who they are."
Richard got a lot of interest on the site but kept coming back to Carla's profile. "She was just I wanted," he says. "She is a wife, a mother, a grandmother and very stable in her career."
Sparks flew when they met for the first time. "When I flew to Kansas City to meet her, I proposed the first weekend," Richard explains. They were married two months later. "I would have never met her without FarmersOnly. We lived 800 miles apart!"
Together, Richard and Carla's family now includes six children and seven grandchildren. One of Carla's sons met his wife on FarmersOnly, too. "You can call us a FarmersOnly family," says Richard.
"My three daughters have really taken Carla in and we've got a big, big family now. It's wonderful," Richard says. "I've enjoyed the grandkids as much as anything in this relationship, but Christmas is going to be expensive this year," Richard jokes.
Cliff Kinnetz, a farmer from Emmetsburg, Iowa, had the same success on FarmersOnly. He met his wife, Sara, and became the new dad to her three children. After spending much of his life without kids, Cliff is excited about it. "It's great. There's never a dull moment. I've had to build onto the house since then." Sara's father came to the United States from England to become a farmer. She loves farm life and is thrilled she can now raise her children on a farm.
Sara was widowed for three years before she joined FarmersOnly. Cliff wasn't really looking for someone with children, but he kept coming back to Sara's profile. When he reached out, there was an immediate bond.
"I had met some other women and was nervous as heck and it wasn't at all that way with her," Cliff recalls. "When we met in person, I was instantly comfortable with her." They drove around some quiet back roads in the countryside and talked.
They dated for about two years and talked every night on the phone before Cliff agreed to buy Sara a ring with his birthstone from the month of April if he had a good crop year. It was the next day before Sara realized his birthstone was a diamond and that he was going to propose. She called Cliff and accepted. The couple married on Nov. 11, 2011 (or "11-11-11"). "I'm into numbers," Cliff explains. "And she didn't want anyone to forget the date."
Cliff and Sara are looking forward to spending Christmas Eve near Sara's family in the Mason City, Iowa, area. Because they can't all fit in her relatives' house, Cliff and Sara stay with the kids in a hotel nearby. "The kids really enjoy swimming in the hotel pool," Cliff says. "It's a completely new way for me to spend Christmas, but we really have fun."
Cliff says the new holiday traditions are a blend of his favorites and Sara's. "I have two brothers and two sisters who all live nearby," he says. "We all get together with my whole family on Thanksgiving and Easter with all the kids, cousins and grandkids." Theirs, too, is now a FarmersOnly family, gathering together to celebrate the holidays.
FarmersOnly.com was founded in 2005 to help single farmers, ranchers and other country-minded folks with down-to-earth values to find love in the United States and Canada. It now boasts more than 350,000 registrants, countless relationships and an estimated one marriage per week.
