Judd Ranch bulls dominate Denver Pen Show

Judd Ranch Gelbvieh and Balancer bulls brought home two Champion banners and a Reserve Champion banner from the 2013 National Western Stock Show's Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Show conducted Jan. 13 in Denver, Colo. Judd Ranch's Pen of 5 purebred Gelbvieh bulls were designated the Champion Pen of 5, with its Pen of 3 purebred Gelbvieh bulls earning the top spot as well. Judd Ranch's Pen of 5 Balancer bulls took home the National Western Stock Show's Reserve Champion banner.

"We couldn't be happier," said Dave Judd. "The judge of Denver's Pen Show is seeking bulls that will work best for the commercial cowman. Since producing bulls for the commercial cowmen is the bread-and-butter of our program, we appreciate the affirmation that our bulls are hitting that goal."

Exhibitors of Denver's Pen Show are all well aware of what type of bulls it takes to garner a Championship banner. Year after year, pen show judge after pen show judge underscore the importance of bulls being a complete and balanced package--bulls that combine outstanding performance and balanced EPDs with structural correctness, large scrotal circumference, docile temperament and pounds of beef. This year's Denver Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Show judge Don MacLennan commented repeatedly that his goal was to identify the pens of bulls that would best meet the demands and needs of today's commercial cow-calf producer.

Judd Ranch's Champion Pen of 5 Gelbvieh was comprised of five black bulls born January-February 2012: two JRI Pop A Top sons, a JRI Turbo son, a JRI Top Secret son and a JRI Secret Instinct son. Scrotal circumference average for the pen was a 41.7 cm. Ribeye area average for the five was 15.79 sq. in. Four of the bulls in the pen are homozygous polled.

Judd Ranch's Champion Pen of 3 Gelbvieh included two JRI Pop A Top sons and one JRI Turbo son, all born in February and March 2012. This all-red pen posted a scrotal circumference average of 41.8 cm, a frame score average of 5.8 and a ribeye area average of 15.15 sq. in. Two of the bulls in this pen are homozygous polled.

Judd Ranch's Reserve Champion Pen of 5 Balancer bulls were all sired by Mytty in Focus and black. Four of the bulls were homozygous polled and born in January 2012, with the fifth team member born in early February. Pen statistics: 41.8 cm scrotal circumference average, 6.0 frame score average, and 15.16 ribeye area average.

Members of Judd Ranch's Champion Pen of 5, Champion Pen of 3 and Reserve Champion Pen of 3 will sell in Judd Ranch's annual bull sale, March 2, at the ranch.
