EPA rules on high ozone readings related to burning

The Environmental Protection Agency recently notified the Kansas Department of Health and Environment that certain high ozone readings in Wichita and Kansas City will not be considered in determining if these cities are meeting national air quality standards. This "exceptional event" ruling was related to prescribed burning in the Flint Hills on several days in April 2011.
Region VII EPA officials visited the Kansas Livestock Association office recently and confirmed the federal agency made the exceptional event determination because of the Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan, adopted by KDHE in December 2010. KLA was one of several stakeholders that assisted KDHE in crafting the voluntary smoke management plan.
