Horticulture Workshop set for Feb. 23

By Linda Langelo

CSU Extension Horticulture Program Associate

Learning how to "Grow Plants Successfully on Challenging Sites" is the topic of the Horticulture Workshop being held Feb. 23 at the Burlington Community Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rhonda Janke, an Extension specialist from the Department of Forestry and Recreation Resources of Kansas State University, will be teaching us about the "Soil Quality for Growing Fruits and Vegetables" and "Soil Fertility and Soil Test Interpretation." Understanding the soil is essential to growing healthy plants and keeping them healthy.

Joel Schneekloth from Colorado State University Extension as our regional water specialist will be presenting "Water Management Topics: Rain Harvesting--Can you do it and How?" The presentation is designed to cover other water topics as well. Besides understanding soil, understanding water and how to manage water is equally as important during drought years.

Lastly, Sabine Martin from Kansas State University at the Department of Agronomy as an agronomy program associate will teach us about "Growing on Previously Used Sites--Opportunities and Challenges." Fitting in with this, Ganga Hettiarachchi from Kansas State University Department of Agronomy as associate professor of soil and environmental quality will teach us about "Soil Contaminants: Bioavailability and Transfer".

Pre-registration is $35, which includes lunch. A $10 late fee will be applied after Feb. 15. Call the Kit Carson County Extension Office at 719-346-5571 to pre-register or for more information. A snow date is scheduled for March 2 with the same schedule.
