Central Kansas Market Vegetable Growers Workshop set for Feb. 16Kansas Locally grown vegetables are fresh, delicious, and can boost the local economy. The 4th annual Central Kansas Market Vegetable Growers Workshop, sponsored by Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, and Reno County Extension, will give beginning and experienced vegetable growers new skills to improve their production methods and marketing skills for selling their local vegetables, while meeting an increasing demand for locally grown produce. The workshop will cover the basic vegetable and fruit production with a special emphasis on fruit production this year. Topics will include: apple production, peach production, tomato grafting research update, winter gardening, post-harvest care of produce, and K-State research update. Featured speakers include: Frank Gieringer of Gieringer's Orchard, speaking on Success on a Diverse Fruit & Vegetable Farm; Jared Beckner of Beckner's Orchard, speaking on Peach Production; Rex Rees and Mike Gehrhardt of Rees Fruit Farm and Pome on the Range Orchard, speaking on Apple Production; and a panel discussion of new and experienced growers sharing their experiences with different marketing methods. The workshop will be held Feb. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 4-H Hall at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center at 21st and Ridge in Wichita.
