Extension to hold EPD and Genetics School in Clay CenterKansas As the spring bull-buying season approaches, make sure you are ready to make the best genetic decisions for your operation. The age of technology has brought us more information then ever on the potential performance of young bulls, but at the same time has made selection of the best bull confusing. With Expected Progeny Differences on so many characteristics, how do you know what is most important for your operation? Are EPDs for all bulls comparable? What are selection indexes and genomically-enhanced EPDs? Investing in a young bull is expensive, how do you know that you are making a good decision? On Jan. 23, there will be an EPD and Genetics School held in Clay Center to answer these questions and give cattle producers new information on how to evaluate the genetics of their herd relative to their operational goals. Bob Weaber, Ph.D., K-State cow/calf specialist, and Robin Slattery, River Valley Extension District livestock agent, will be presenting. The program will be held at the 4-H Building in the Clay Center Fairgrounds, with registration at 4:45 p.m. and school from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dinner will be provided for the first 25 registrants, sponsored by Genex Cooperative.
