Amarillo livestock sales report

The Amarillo Livestock Auction Summary, Amarillo, Texas, reported receipts of 892 head Jan. 28, compared to 537 head two weeks ago, and 638 head last year, according to the USDA-Texas Department of Agriculture Market News, Amarillo, Texas.

Compared to last reported sale two weeks ago, there were not enough comparable sales of feeder steers or heifers for an adequate market trend however a higher undertone was noted. Trade activity was fairly active on good demand for the loads of yearling heifers available in the offering. Cattle futures closed gaining some lost ground which boosted optimism in the markets. Slaughter cows were steady to firm with slaughter bulls not well tested. Slaughter cows and bulls made up 3%, 1% replacements and 96% feeders. The feeder supply included 14% steers and bulls, 6% heifers, with nearly 79% of the run weighed over 600 pounds.

Steers: Medium and large frame 1, 350 to 400 lbs., 210.00 to 214.00; few 500 lbs., 172.50; few 587 lbs., 164.00; lot 771 lbs., 144.00. Holsteins, Large frame 3, few 501 lbs., 86.00; few 731 lbs., 80.00.

Feeder bulls: Medium and large frame 1, few 485 lbs., 165.00; few 520 lbs., 166.50; few 570 lbs., 154.50; lot 651 lbs., 138.50.

Heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 350 to 400 lbs., 174.00 to 179.00; 400 to 450 lbs., 167.00 to 169.00; 450 to 500 lbs., 156.00 to 163.00; few 523 lbs., 154.00; 550 to 600 lbs., 143.00 to 148.00; load 634 lbs., 140.50, few 600 lb. calves 140.00; few 675 lbs., fleshy 128.50; several loads 783 lbs., 140.25. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 700 to 750 lbs., 134.25. Medium and large frame 2, 725 to 775 lbs., 117.75 to 124.50.

Slaughter cows: Breaking, 75 to 80% lean, 1200 to 1500 lbs., 75.00 to 78.00. Boning, 80 to 85% lean, 1000 to 1700 lbs., 75.00 to 80.50; high dressing, 82.00; low dressing, 69.50 to 74.50. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1400 lbs., 80.00; high dressing, 82.50 to 84.00; low dressing, 72.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, individual 1800 lbs., 100.00; high dressing, individual 1570 lbs., 102.75.

Bred cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, Aged to Short and Solid Mouth, 1100 to 1500 lbs., 6 to 9 months bred 1000.00 to 1100.00; Broken Mouth 1200 to 1300 lbs., 6 to 9 months bred 950.00 to 975.00. Medium and large frame 2, Young 1250 lbs., 6 to 9 months bred 1010.00.
