K-State to host Kansas Junior Meat Goat Day March 23
Kansas State University will host its third annual Kansas Junior Meat Goat Producer Day March 23 in Weber Arena in Manhattan.
"The Junior Meat Goat Day is an interactive way for young producers to learn about meat goat production and management practices," said Kristine Clowers, youth livestock coordinator with K-State Research and Extension. "While the program includes information that would be beneficial for youth who show goats in 4-H and other competitions, it's also helpful to anyone who is interested in raising meat goats. This year, participants will learn about selection, nutrition, health and show ring practice."
Registration begins at 8:45 a.m., with the program starting at 9:15 a.m. Presentations will include: Market/Breeding Goat Selection; Facilities; Health and Wellness; Market/Breeding Goat Nutrition; and Market/Breeding Fitting and Showing. A non-competitive Meat Goat Skillathon will be available for youth to participate in, which includes identification of feeds, equipment used for general goat care, wholesale meat goat cuts, and breeds. The day ends with an awards ceremony.
The cost to attend is $15 per person if paid by March 8 or $20 after that date. Participants will receive a T-shirt, complimentary lunch and a Meat Goat Show Guide. More information is available at http://www.asi.ksu.edu/p.aspx?tabid=58 and scroll to "Important Deadlines/Calendar."
