NRCS announces sign-up for Wetland Reserve ProgramThe U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service is announcing a new sign-up period for the Wetlands Reserve Program. "WRP was re-authorized by Congress with the extension of the 2008 Food, Farm and Jobs Bill (Farm Bill)," said Ivan Dozier, NRCS State Conservationist. "The re-authorization allows for NRCS to begin taking applications immediately with a cutoff date of March 1, 2013." All applications ranked and inspected that meet the land eligibility requirements will be considered for funding on April 5. The Wetlands Reserve Program is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance wetlands on their property. Landowners can establish long-term conservation and wildlife practices and protection. To be considered eligible for WRP, applicants must have farm records established with USDA's Farm Service Agency. The Geographic Area Rate Caps used to establish easement payments have increased significantly for fiscal year 2013. "We encourage interested landowners to visit their local NRCS field office as soon as possible," said Dozier. "NRCS staff is ready to help you work through the application process."
