Sheep 101Did you know? --A male sheep is called a ram. --A female sheep is called a ewe. --A baby sheep is called a lamb. --Sheep live in groups called flocks. Most lambs are born in the spring. Mother ewes can give birth to one, two or three lambs--and sometimes even four or five! Lambs stay with their mother until they are five months old and are considered full grown at about 6 months old. Lamb is the name for sheep less than 1 year old. Sheep make a bleating sound. A baby lamb can identify its mother by her bleat. There are 914 different breeds of sheep in the world. In the United States, there are 35 different breeds of sheep.
