Ford County Conservation District holds annual meeting


The 65th annual meeting of the Ford County Conservation District was held on Feb. 9 at the Ford County 4-H Fair Exhibit Building in Dodge City, Kan. An election was held for one district supervisor who will serve on the Ford County Conservation District Board for a term of three years. Wesley Slattery of Dodge City was nominated for this position and elected to serve as a district supervisor.

The winners of the 2012 Poster, Essay, and Limerick Contests were as follows:

Poster contest winners

Grades K to 1

The top two limericks were entered in the 2012 Kansas Association of Conservation Districts Limerick Contest. Arianna Ormord's limerick received an Honorable Mention award in that contest.

Will Ellis, Kingsdown, Kan., served as a district supervisor and advisor on the Ford County Conservation District Board. He was unable to attend the annual meeting. His wife, Laura Ellis, accepted a certificate of appreciation given to him by the District Board.

There were two recipients of the Ford County Conservation District's 2013 Scholarship. Jared Helfrich of Wright, Kan., and Abbey Rudd of Bucklin, Kan. Jared is the son of Brian and Kate Helfrich of Wright. Abbey is the daughter of Casey and Leighton Rudd of Bucklin. Jared Helfrich and Abbey Rudd are students at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan.

A Distinguished Service Award was presented to Maureen Flax of Dodge City, Kan. This award is presented to a person who helps promote good soil and water conservation practices and for their dedicated service to the Ford County Conservation District.

The guest speaker for the evening was Curtis Wolf. He is the site manager at Fort Hays State University's Kansas Wetlands Education Center at Cheyenne Bottoms. The topic of his presentation was "The Sights and Sounds of Cheyenne Bottoms and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.
