Turn 'N Burn for the Cure a success in 2012

The Turn 'N Burn For The Cure barrel race held Sept. 15 to 16 at the Yuma County Fairgrounds in Yuma, Colo., was a success again in it's 5th year.

The open 4D race Sept. 15 had 45 contestants and 46 entries Sept. 16. The youth races had 15 contestants each day. The open race winners Sept. 15 were Deb Roberts, Susan Jensen, and Brenda Delano in the 1D; Nancy Smith, Shenel Wells, and Carrie Byum in the 2D; Shenel Wells, Jill Whomble, and Lindsey Talbert in the 3D; and Billie Ray Miller, Shelly Thomas, and Shawna Blanka in the 4D. On Sept. 16, the 1D winners were Brenda Delano, Riata Day, and Susan Jensen; the 2D winners were Chris Basler, Danielle Lamb, and Shenel Wells; 3D winners were Karen Baker, Taylor Hendrix, and Taylor Miller; and the 4D placers were Toni Gee, Jolene Baumgartner, and Heather Day.

The Triple Sprint race had a lot of support and the teams in the youth division received jackets, necklace sets, gift bags, fly leg wraps, and bottle covers. In the open, Triple Sprint race teams received Lubrisyn joint supplement, tool kits, car washes, gift certificates from several local businesses, mirrors, reins, tack bags, sunglasses, and car visors and shammies.

The auction buyers did an awesome job again this year raising $992. The top 3 buyers were Fred and Kay Bushner followed by John and Deb Schroetlin and Shenel Wells. Awards given in this area were gift bags and lots of local gift certificates. We were able to give awards to all 9 buyers thanks to all of our great sponsors. And we appreciate all of our buyers too. We could not raise as much money as we do without you.

The short round winners in the open were given handmade custom buckles. They were: 1D Susan Jensen; 2D Wacey Day; 3D Heather Day; 4D Billie Ray Miller. A target time saddle was given to the contestant with the 2 closest times on the same horse in the open races. The winner of the saddle was Kindi Kirchenschlager.

We had a really good turnout of contestants and buyers. We also had great sponsors and volunteers to help make this event happen. This year we raised $2,900 that was donated to the American Cancer Society. We are really happy with the amount we were able to give them and look forward to an even better year next year. We want to thank everyone that helped in any way to make this a success. Without all the help we get we couldn't put this race on so again, thank you to all the volunteers, contestants, sponsors, and buyers. See ya again in 2013.
