Our annual, popular Coffee Shop Meeting is coming up Feb. 20 in Wilmore. This year's topic is Drought Recovery. Bob Gillen, who is head of K-State's Western Kansas Agriculture Research Centers and stationed in Hays, will speak on Drought Impacts on Great Plains Grasslands. Quite a bit of Gillen's presentation will focus on what to expect from the range as we "heal up" from the drought. He has data from the 1950s drought and drought recovery from both the Hays Station and also USDA Southern Plains Station in Woodward where he was formerly employed as a range specialist.
Also as a part of our program we are working at putting together a panel of area ranchers who experienced the 50s drought. We expect they can add quite a bit of insight as to the time frame of range recovery. Lunch will be served at 12 p.m. with the program starting around 1 p.m. in The Wilmore Community Center. This program is sponsored by The Comanche Pool Prairie Resource Foundation, K-State Research and Extension, Area Soil Conservation Districts, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and Kansas Wildlife and Parks. If you have questions contact Comanche County Extension at 620-582-2411 or mdeewall@ksu.edu.
