Hereford show held at NWSS

Hoffman Herefords, Thedford, Neb., reigned victorious in the Hereford carload show on Jan. 18, during the 2013 National Western Stock Show in Denver. Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, topped the pen of three bull show for the third year in a row and Coyote Ridge Ranch, LaSalle, Colo., won the pen of three female show in the Denver Yards.

Blake Oschner, Torrington, Wyo., Brooke Bieber, Onida, S.D., and Bill Goehring, Libertyville, Iowa, teamed up to evaluate the Yard shows, which included five carloads, 39 bull pens and 16 heifer pens.

Hoffman's champion carload of junior bull calves topped the scales at an average weight of 1,324 pounds, and a weight per day of age of 3.59. The group was sired by AH JDH Cracker Jack 26U ET, CL 1 Domino 955W, CRR About Time 743, Golden Oak Outcross 18U, H Payback 807 ET and AH JDH Cracker Jack 26U ET. On show day the group posted average expected progeny differences of birth weight 3.5; weaning weight 54; yearling weight 87; milk 24; and milk and growth 51. The group had an average scrotal measurement of 39 cm.

Reserve grand champion carload honors went to Delaney Herefords Inc., Lake Benton, Minn. The group was sired by BAR JZ Rumble 525X, AH JDH Cracker Jack 26U ET, THM Durango 4037, TH 122 71I Victor 719T and JDH 10S Yankee 39X. The average weight of the load was 1,151 lb. and they calculated a WDA of 3.38. The average EPDs of the group were BW 3.4; WW 61; YW 94; MM 25; and M&G 55. They had an average scrotal measurement of 35.1 cm.

Standing in the 2013 pen show spotlight was Colyer Herefords with its pen that first claimed the champion junior bull calf division. The calves were sired by TH 89T 743 Untapped 425X ET and NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET, averaged 1,303 lb., and had a calculated WDA of 3.91 with an average scrotal measurement of 36 cm. The group's EPDs were BW 3.8; WW 53; YW 83; MM 24; and M&G 51.

Jensen Bros., Courtland, Kan., was champion in the spring bull calf division before being selected reserve grand champion pen with a group sired by TH SHR 605 57G Bismarck 243R and THR Thor 4029. The average EPDs on the bulls were BW 3.8; WW 60; YW 99; MM 18; and M&G 48. The pen weighed an average of 1,177 lb. and calculated a 3.75 WDA with a 36 cm average scrotal measurement.

The grand champion pen of females and champion in the junior heifer calf division exhibited by Coyote Ridge Ranch and sired by CRR Helton 980 and TH 122 71I Victor 719T. The group posted average EPDs of BW 2.6; WW 58; YW 88; MM 24; and M&G 53. ? Mrnak Herefords, Bowman, N.D., showed the reserve champion pen of three females. These heifers were sired by HH Advance 8203U ET, Remitall Online 122L and MH Monument 3147. The group posted EPDs of BW 4.8; WW 53; YW 86; MM 19; and M&G 45.
