Northwest Kansas rural housing project receives financing
USDA Rural Development State Director Patty Clark and Kansas Housing Resources Corporation Executive Director Dennis L. Mesa announced nearly $2 million in financing to the Northwest Kansas Housing, Inc., a non-profit organization, to build homes in Rexford, Kan. The project consists of constructing five duplex homes that will be available for local farm laborers to rent.
The community of Rexford is home to McCarty Family Farms, which is a large dairy that contracts its condensed milk to the Dannon Company. The McCarty Family Farms is planning future expansions, and anticipates adding additional employees. The duplex homes being built will help provide housing for McCarty Family Farms employees, as well as other local farm workers.
USDA Rural Development provided the Northwest Kansas Housing, Inc., with a $500,000 loan and a $965,223 grant for this housing project. The Agency's Farm Labor Housing program provides loans and grants to increase the number of housing units for domestic farm laborers. Farm Labor Housing loans and grants are provided to buy, build, improve, or repair housing for farm laborers and can be made to farmers, association of farmers, family farm corporations, Indian tribes, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and associations of farmworkers.
"USDA Rural Development is committed to helping rural Kansas communities have access to affordable housing," said Clark. "With the Northwest Kansas Housing, Inc., leveraging federal and state funds for this project, the community of Rexford will benefit by having additional safe and affordable housing options available for a growing population of farm workers."
KHRC provided the Northwest Kansas Housing, Inc., with a $400,000 grant from the Moderate Income Housing Program through the City of Rexford. The program offers grants and/or loans, including the development of multi-family rental units, single-family for-purchase homes, and water, sewer and street extensions.
"KHRC is pleased to support the public and private partners working together to bring quality, affordable housing to a rural community experiencing significant job growth," said Mesa. "Farm workers, like those that will soon be hired by McCarty Farms, play an important role in Kansas' agricultural industry."
Northwest Kansas Housing, Inc., is a non-profit community housing development organization serving 24 counties in Northwest Kansas. The non-profit strives to develop affordable housing for low and moderate income families.
"This project is important to the community of Rexford because there is not decent housing available in the area, and the McCarty Dairy is a growing business that is adding employees," stated Randy Hrabe, Executive Director of the Northwest Kansas Planning & Development Commission. "Financing provided by USDA and KHRC was critical to the development of this project because there wasn't another financing option available, and there is an immediate need for housing."
