Breeder receives World Simmental Federation honors

During the American Simmental Association’s most recent annual meeting in Denver, Roger Kenner, Leeds, N.D., was added to the impressive list of individuals and family operations that have been awarded the prestigious World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation’s Golden Book Award.

A champion of performance cattle and performance programs, Kenner has long advocated the use of proven and well-tested genetics for commercial cattlemen. He began his cattle herd in 1974 by procuring genetics from progressive Canadian breeders. He has made significant contributions as a Simmental breeder and leader on both the state and national levels, including chairman of the board for the American Simmental Association. Through his strong and energetic leadership, he has touched many lives and numerous cattle operations in both the U.S. and Canada.

Widely known for innovative thinking, he was a founding director of Dakota Growers Pasta Company; serves actively on the Leeds Economic Development Board; is a part owner of Golden Plans Frozen Foods; and, sits on the board of North Dakota Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance.

Presentation of the 2013 Golden Book Award was made at the Chairman’s Reception during the ASA’s 45th Annual Meeting Jan. 20 in Denver. Kenner was awarded the Golden Book Award along with fellow ASA members/former Trustees, Willie Altenburg, Colo.; and Tommy Brown, Ala.

The World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation Golden Book Award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the development of the Simmental/Simbrah breeds in the United States. The ASA Board, which nominates and approves Golden Book Awards, authorizes up to three awards annually. Recipients of the award receive a plaque from the WSFF and a framed citation signed by the ASA Chairman of the Board. The coveted award is the ASA equivalent of nomination to Hall-of-Fame status.
