Management decisions critical for new and inexperienced ranch owners

All ranchers may be “planning for profit,” but some might have a hard time capitalizing on it without key advice offered at the annual Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Ranch Management University, coordinators said.

This workshop opens with a Planning for Profit discussion and continues for five days addressing topics that can help new landowners improve their understanding of how to manage various resources they find on their ranch properties, said Larry Redmon, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension state forage specialist.

The workshop is scheduled April 15 to 19 at the G. Rollie White Visitor’s Center, 7707 Raymond Stotzer Parkway, on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station.

Registration is $500 and attendance is limited to the first 50 people enrolled. To register online and for more information, go to http://agriliferegister.tamu.edu and enter “ranch management” into the search window.

The workshop is divided into the following segments:

•“Gettin’ Started” includes planning for a profit, basic soils, forage establishment and beef genetic strategies and nutrient requirements.

•“The Basics” includes soil fertility, forage species, soil and hay sampling, sprayer calibration, cattle body condition scores, non-traditional production strategies, cattle management during a drought, Beef Quality Assurance, sheep and goat production, hay production and forage nutritive value, horse production, stocking rates, marketing, feed alternatives and cattle production strategies.

•“Wildlife on Your Piece of Property” includes discussions on wildlife and livestock integration, farm pond management, hog trap demonstrations, ecotourism, feral hog control and Rio Grande Turkey Management.

•Additional topics include weed and brush management, using wildlife as agriculture for property tax purposes and the Lone Star Healthy Streams program.

Meals and break refreshments are covered by the registration fee, as well as a resource CD containing more than 100 publications covering ranch resource management.
