Colorado feeder cattle auction summary

The Colorado Auction Feeder Cattle Summary, Greeley, Colo., reported receipts of 6,835 head Sept. 7, compared to 5,494 head last week and 3,561 head last year, according to the USDA-Colorado Department of Agriculture Market News, Greeley, Colo.

Compared to last week, steer calves traded mostly steady to $3 lower. Yearling steers and heifers were mostly steady. Heifer calves were mostly steady to $6 lower. Range conditions continued to deteriorate across the state with NASS reporting 85% of the pastures and rangelands in Colorado in poor to very poor condition, with cooler weather on the horizon. Poor range conditions, coupled with the USDA predicting U.S. alfalfa production to be down 16% from a year ago, have forced input costs to rise, which has forced many calves to be marketed early and cow herds to be culled harder. Trading activity was moderate on moderate to good demand. The supply consisted of 64% steers and 36% heifers. Feeders over 600 pounds made up 45% of the total supply.
