Colorado Beef Profit Alliance field day set for Sept. 15

Colorado

A multi-breed field day, geared toward commercial ranchers, will be Sept. 15 near Wellington. Colorado Simmental Association, Colorado State University and Red Angus Association of Colorado have joined forces to host an outstanding rancher outreach program called Colorado Beef Profit Alliance.

The field day, which will run 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 15 at CSU's Agricultural Research, Development & Education Center, will feature numerous industry leaders and experts. The program focuses on "Has the cost of production changed the way we look at beef production?" The day-long session costs $15, which includes lunch by CSU's meats department.

Morning highlights include Tom Brink of JBS Five Rivers on feedyard value; CSU's Dr. Kraig Peel on cost management with genetics; Myron Edelman and Will Townsend on marketing and adding value through the system; and Dr. Lauren Hyde and Larry Keenan on genetic inputs.

The afternoon features Patsy Houghton of Heartland Cattle Co., on the question "Has crossbreeding become more important?" The Nebraskan is followed by Dave Weaber, a Colorado native now a Delhaize meat buyer, on what supermarkets see in consumer choices. Participants also will be given a guided tour of CSU's ARDEC facility.

Sponsors include Genex Cooperative Inc., Northern Feed & Bean, CSU, CSA and RAAC. For a schedule and to RSVP, visit www.coloradosimmental.com or call 719-469-0020.
