Shawnee County Corn Test plot tour held

Kansas

The Shawnee County Corn Test plot tour was held on Aug. 13 at a site operated by Steve Porubsky near Silver Lake with about 50 producers in attendance. The test plot had 24 varieties from 12 seed companies.

The purpose of the test plot is to see what corn varieties produce the most under Shawnee County growing conditions. The test plot was planted on April 26 and should be harvested in August or September depending on weather conditions. Once harvested, each variety will be measured and weighed to figure the bushels per area production.

After the tour, the group went to the Silver Lake Community Center for an evening meal sponsored by J.B. Pearl Sales and Service of St. Mary's and prepared by Grove 4-H Club. The group also learned more from Stu Duncan, KSU Extension specialist, Crops and Soils, and Doug Jardine, Extension specialist and state leader, about crop pests and diseases to watch for.
