Harvest, planting continuesArkansas On average, farmers had 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Oct. 7, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Arkansas Field Office, Oct. 9. Topsoil moisture supplies were 7 percent very short, 25 percent short, 59 percent adequate and 9 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 18 percent very short, 34 percent short, 45 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus. Low temperatures ranged from 33 degrees at Fayetteville and Ozark to 48 degrees at Eudora. Highs ranged from 80 degrees at Mena to 87 degrees at Fort Smith and DeQueen. Cotton was 99 percent opening bolls and 50 percent harvested, 28 percent ahead of the previous year and 18 percent ahead of the five-year average. Rice was 95 percent harvested, 21 percent ahead of the previous year and 19 percent ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans were 95 percent yellowing, 85 percent shedding and 70 percent mature. Fifty-three percent of soybeans were harvested, 21 percent ahead of the previous year and 19 percent ahead of the five-year average. Winter wheat was 11 percent planted and 2 percent emerged. Harvesting continued throughout the state amid intermittent rains. Livestock were in fair condition. Pasture and range conditions were mostly poor to fair. Producers continued to treat for armyworms.
