Bison workshop set for Sept. 29Iowa Students, young adults and others interested in the burgeoning buffalo business will have an opportunity to learn more about profitable production and marketing during a one-day "Introduction to the Bison Advantage Workshop" scheduled at a one-day workshop scheduled for Sept. 29 at the Williamsburg Jr.-Sr. High, with a hands-on demonstration at the Dreesman Buffalo Ranch near Tama. "This is a great opportunity for young adults and others to take a look at some of the key areas that are driving the bison business as a growing, profitable niche in the agricultural economy," said workshop coordinator John Daniels, the vo-ag teacher at Williamsburg Jr.-Sr. High. The workshop is being sponsored the the National Bison Association, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency. Speakers during the morning session will include young producers who will share their experience in getting started as buffalo ranchers. Bison Association Executive Director Dave Carter will also discuss the diversity of opportunities available in raising bison, and in marketing the meat. Tom Dreesman, owner and operator of Dreesman Buffalo Ranch near Tama will also share his experience in building a successful business that now supplies regional health food stores in Des Moines and elsewhere. The morning workshop begins with registration at 8 a.m. at the Jr.-Sr. High School in Williamsburg. At noon, the group will travel by bus to the Dreesman Buffalo Ranch near Tama, where participants will tour of the bison herd, and receive a demonstration of the facilities. The fee for the workshop is $10 for the cost of lunch. Pre-registration is not required, but is encouraged.
