Extension field day a successKansas
Nearly 90 producers from eastern Kansas recently gathered at Dalebanks Angus in Eureka, Kan., to learn the latest advances, techniques and management strategies that will help beef producers to maximize their efficiency and profit potential. Presentations included growth and nutrition, breeding and pregnancy detection, as well as low-stress handling techniques from industry-leading researchers around the country. Delivering the highest possible quality beef to consumers is always one of the chief concerns of any beef producer. K-State Research and Extension's Building Better Heifers field day helped to ensure that producers are equipped with the tools they need to produce strong females in the beef industry. Special thanks include the Tom Perrier and Matt Perrier families at Dalebanks Angus, Certified Angus Beef, Pfizer Animal Health and Kansas State Research and Extension. The program from the field day included: --Rick Funston, professor at UNL, Lowering the cost of heifer development; --Sandy Johnson, northwest area livestock specialist with K-State Research and Extension, Early pregnancy diagnosis and estrous synchronization options; --Kara Wilson, CAB, and Tara Amen, Use of DNA panels for heifer selection; --Matt Perrier, Dalebanks Angus, Bub box and low stress handling facilities; --Scott Lake, University of Wyoming Extension specialist, Post-breeding nutrition and early pregnancies; --Dale Grotelueschen, DVM, Pfizer Animal Health: Healthy heifers and biosecurity concerns; and --Bob Weaber, professor and Extension specialist at Kansas State University, Selection of breeding heifers and understanding EPDs.
