Rain, snow help to improve soil moisture levelsWyoming The majority of the state received some precipitation during the week ending Nov. 11, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Nov. 13. Uinta County reported approximately 6 to 8 inches of snow in the early part of the week, along with cold temperatures. Converse County recorded temperatures below zero, and continued dry conditions. High temperatures across the state ranged from 50 degrees at Lake Yellowstone to 79 degrees in Sheridan. Low temperatures ranged from -9 in Worland to 13 degrees in Rock Springs. All but 4 stations received some precipitation. Conditions allowed for 5.4 days suitable for field work. Beneficial rains and snow allowed topsoil moisture to improve to 68 percent short to very short and 32 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture was rated 90 percent short to very short and 10 percent adequate. Eighty-four percent of the corn was reported as harvested, ahead of last year at 63 percent and 48 percent for the average. Alfalfa harvest remained unchanged at 85 percent complete behind 89 percent last year and 91 percent for the average. Winter wheat condition remained unchanged at 35 percent poor to very poor, 36 percent fair and 29 percent good. Wind damage to wheat was reported at 36 percent light and wheat is reported to have no freeze damage thus far. Stock water supplies improved to 14 percent very short, 39 percent short, and 47 percent adequate. Livestock producers have begun supplemental feeding. Date: 11/19/2012
