Having a profitable farm and ranch operation can be difficult in the 21st century. Farmers and ranchers face many challenges such as volatility in the grain and livestock markets, increases in production costs, a new farm bill, and changes in the global economy. To help farmers and ranchers have a better understanding of these challenges, the Shawnee, Douglas, Leavenworth, Johnson, Frontier District, and Meadowlark District Extension Services will host an Ag Profitability Conference. The Ag Profitability Conference will be held on Feb. 6 at the Shawnee County Extension Office meeting room at 1740 SW Western, Topeka on the Kansas Expocentre. The conference will start at 9:30 a.m. with registration, and will conclude by 3 p.m.
Topics and speakers from the K-State Agricultural Economics Department will include: Grain Market Analysis and Outlook, Dan O'Brien; Crop Leases, Kevin Dhuyvetter; Beef and Cattle Economic Market Outlook, Glynn Tonsor; Formulating Price Forecasts Using Readily Available Information, Glynn Tonsor and Kevin Dhuyvetter; Update on the 2012 Farm Bill, Troy Dumler; and Top 10 Uses of AgManager.info, Rich Llewelyn.
The registration fee is $8 per person or $13 at the door and reservations are requested by Feb. 2. The fee is to cover the cost of meals and materials. Checks are to be made payable to the Shawnee County Extension.
