Woman inducted into Auctioneer Hall of Fame

Colorado

Shannon M. Schur, president and CEO of Schur Success Auction & Appraisal, Colorado Springs, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Colorado Auctioneers Association at their annual conference held in Denver. Schur is only the second woman in the 53-year history of the Association to receive this honor.

"To be inducted into the CAA Hall of Fame is the highest honor an auctioneer can receive," said Lance Nichols, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association. To be considered, auctioneers must be nominated by a fellow auctioneer and must meet specific criteria. "Auctioneers must demonstrate not only a passion for the business, but a commitment to their fellow members and to the community at large" said Nichols. "The inductee must be approved by the current Hall of Fame members, who look at the nominees very carefully" he said. Typically, only one auctioneer is awarded this honor each year. Nichols added that the person selected must fit the criteria for a role model and ambassador for the industry.

Schur started her career working for her father, Ray Fenter, who started the auction company in Arvada, Colo., in the early 80s. Over the years, she worked all aspects of the company from the office to the auction block. She graduated from Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Mont., in 1996. She continued her auction education by completing certifications as a Benefit Auctioneer Specialist, Graduate Personal Property Appraiser, and the pinnacle of auctioneer education, the Certified Auctioneers Institute. In 2000, Fenter moved to Arizona and began the transition of the company to Schur. In 2004 he retired and Shannon took over. Since then, the company has experienced steady growth year after year, Schur is the exclusive auctioneer for the city and county of Denver, and operates storage auctions at more than 125 facilities throughout Colorado.

Schur had served on the CAA Board of Directors for more than 10 years, including a term as president. She if a life member of the National Auctioneers Association, and a Bronze Sponsor of the National Auctioneers Foundation. She has served on various committees for the NAA and is currently the NAA ambassador to the Colorado association. Schur also teaches for the Worldwide College of Auctioneering (Mason City, Iowa), each September when the class comes to Denver. According to Nichols, Schur handles special coaching sessions just for female auctioneers. Schur is also a past board member of the Youth Transformation Center in Colorado Springs.

"This is truly humbling," said Schur at the induction ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza DIA Hotel (Denver) on Jan. 8. "These are people I have looked up to for years and they chose me for this incredible honor."

Schur's selection was announced at the annual meeting by her husband and the newly elected president of CAA, Rich Schur.

It was inevitable that someone as dedicated and as talented as Shannon Schur would take her rightful place among the legends of Colorado auctioneering! Congratulations!
