Auctioneers to meet in Denver

Colorado

Auctioneers from across Colorado and surrounding states will converge on Denver to attend the 54th annual Colorado Auctioneers Association convention Jan. 6 to 8. The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza DIA Hotel and Convention Center located at 15500 E. 40th Avenue in north Denver.

As many as 150 auctioneers, auction staff and family members are expected to attend the annual event--the crown jewel of which is the annual Colorado State Bid-Calling Championship. The contest typically attracts 15 or more contestants who compete for the top prize as well as the opportunity to represent Colorado auctioneers at the national level during the National Auctioneers Association annual convention held in July. The public is invited to attend and watch the contestants compete for the championship, which is scheduled for Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.

The public is also invited to observe the CAA's First-Timers Contest, in which new auctioneers compete for recognition as the top "rookie" auctioneer. That event is followed by the association's Fun Auction--the CAA's major annual fundraising effort. The First Timer's competition and Fun Auction will be held on Jan. 7 beginning at 7 p.m.

The three-day convention offers those who attend a variety of workshops and lectures dealing with the auction profession. Speakers addressing the convention include John Nichols, an auctioneer's auctioneer who conducts nearly 250 auctions annually for Fortune 500 companies; Sam "The Hit Man" Grasso, a talented auctioneer and renowned ringman who specializes in heavy equipment and vehicle sales throughout the U.S.; Scott Schuman, a real estate auctioneer and managing partner of Hall and Hall Auctions based in Colorado; Walter Cade, a Texas auctioneer soon to be featured on A&E networks' "Storage Wars: Texas" and currently performs approximately 200 auctions per year. Other speakers include Dwayne Leslie, the president of Global Auction Guide; Paula Berg, the digital media leader at the firm of Linhart PR; Joel Serafini, a nationally recognized instructor and motivator in the auction profession and C.J. Powell, a respected PR advisor with Cohn Marketing.

The three-day event concludes on Jan. 8 with the annual business membership meeting and election of officers and members of the CAA Board of Directors followed by the annual Hall Of Fame luncheon in which one or more CAA members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The identity of the inductee(s) is a closely guarded secret and never revealed until the formal announcement during the luncheon.

Organized in 1958, the Colorado Auctioneers Association now has about 150 members. The organization promotes the auction method of marketing to all buyers and sellers through continued professionalism, education and experience.
