Producers teaching kids about farmingSALINA, Kan. (AP)--Farmers and ranchers in the Salina area are concerned that the younger generation knows very little about how food gets on the table. So they've stepped up efforts to educate elementary students, by either bringing children to farms to visit, or taking a cow, plants or seeds to Salina schools. Pete Meagher (MAY-ore) is a farmer-rancher from eastern Saline County who also teaches woodworking at Salina Central High School. Meagher says if the younger generation doesn't understand the importance of farming, the agriculture industry could be in jeopardy. The Salina Journal reports that Meagher trades weekly emails about general farm happenings with teachers and students in several Salina schools, and regularly visits two elementary schools. Several other ag producers around Salina are involved in the effort.
