Hay trade mixed

In Nebraska and the East River area of South Dakota, alfalfa and grass hay and dehydrated pellets sold steady. Ground and delivered to feedlots steady, according to the USDA Department of Agriculture Market News, Jan. 6. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Northeast: Good alfalfa, in large squares, $145-$165; good, in large rounds, $120-$135. Good grass hay, in large rounds, $95-$105; fair, in large rounds, $70-$75, in small squares, $125-$135. Corn stalks, in large squares, $50-$60. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $280.

Platte Valley: Premium alfalfa, in large squares, $200-$250; good, in large rounds, $135-$145; premium, in small squares, $250. Good grass, in large rounds, $95, few at $100. Alfalfa ground and delivered to feedlots mostly $180, few at $185. Ground and delivered corn stalks, $110-$115. Cane, in large rounds, $90-$100. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $285-$300.

East River area of South Dakota: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $220-$235 delivered; good, in large squares, $175-$200; fair, in large squares, $190. Utility, in large squares and rounds, $120-$150. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 17% $280, 15% $265. Alfalfa meal, 17% $283. Premium mixed alfalfa-grass, $285 delivered. Premium grass, in large squares, $172.50-$180 delivered; good, in large rounds, $140. Utility, in large rounds, $90-$100. Compressed 60 pound bales (16" x 18" x 22") FOB Yankton, S.D. Supreme alfalfa, $330. Premium timothy, $260. Premium prairie grass, $252.50. Corn stalks, in large rounds, $40.

In Iowa, hay sold steady. Demand was moderate to good on a tight supply.

South central/north central: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $300; good/premium, in large squares, $190-$200, fair/good, in large squares, $170-$180; good, in large rounds, $120; premium, in small squares, $220-$240. Premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares, $200-$220. Grass, in large squares, $120. Straw, in large squares, 145, in small squares, $160.

Rock Valley: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $270; premium, in large squares, $200, in large rounds, $190-$200, in small squares, $295; good, in large rounds, $145-$175. Utility, in large rounds, $125. Good mixed alfalfa-grass, in large rounds, $125-$155; fair, in large rounds, $112.50. Utility, in large rounds, $80-$87.50. In Minnesota, all classes sold steady to $5 higher.

Premium alfalfa-grass mix, in large rounds, $130; good, in large squares, $135-$145; fair, in large rounds, $95-$120. Utility, in large rounds, $80-$85. In Montana, hay prices not well tested due to very few current sales, however a firm to higher undertone was noted on reported sales. Prices below mostly reflect previously contracted hay sales. Trade activity was mostly light. Demand moderate to good.

Premium/supreme alfalfa hay, in large squares, $170-$200, in small squares, $150-$175; good/premium, in large squares, $145-$165, in large rounds, $85-$110, in small squares, $125-$150; good/fair, in large rounds, $75-$90. Good/premium grass hay, in large squares, $130-$150, in large rounds, $85-$100, in small squares, $125-$155; good/fair, in large rounds, $75-$90. Good/premium grass hay, in large squares, $130-$150, in large rounds, $85-$100, in small squares, $125-$155; good/fair, in large rounds, $75-$85. Good timothy hay, in small squares, $150-$180. Straw, in large rounds and squares, $45-$50.

In Wyoming, western Nebraska and western South Dakota, hay trade very slow with many people reporting they are sold out for the year. Corn stalks and wheat straw $5 to $10 higher. Demand was very good with very good buying inquiry noted in all areas. Very short supplies noted in most areas.

Eastern Wyoming: Premium/supreme alfalfa, in large squares, mostly $190-$240, fourth cutting $260-$265; fair/good, in large squares, $185-$230. Wheat grass, $110. Good alfalfa-grass, in large squares, $120. Wheat hay, $60. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% percent protein, $211 delivered wholesale. Wheat straw, $55-$75, $95 delivered.

Central/western Wyoming: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $250; premium, in large squares, $170-$185, in small squares, $210-$250; good, in large squares, western Wyoming $200, 3x3 $190. Premium alfalfa-grass, in large squares, $175-$180, in small squares, $225; good, $115-$120. Grass hay, $125-$150. Oat hay, $120-$130. Alfalfa cubes, $195. Barley and wheat straw, $55-$65, certified $80.

Western Nebraska: Premium/supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $200-$250, in large rounds, $160-$180; fair/good, in large squares, $165-$185, in large rounds, $130; fair, in large rounds, $120 delivered; ground and delivered, $170-$200. Wheat hay, in large rounds, $70. Wheat straw, $75. Corn stalks, $85 delivered.

Western South Dakota: Premium alfalfa, in medium and large squares, $100-$150, third cutting, $160-$180; good, in medium squares, $85-$105, in large rounds, $80-$85; fair, in large rounds, $70. Premium alfalfa-grass, in medium squares, $125, third cutting $160-$180; good, in large rounds, $60-$70, in large squares, $110. Mixed grass, in large rounds, $65-$70. Crested wheat grass, in large rounds, $65.

In Colorado, trading activity and movement was mostly light following the holidays with the majority of the movement being on previously purchased hay. Prices remain steady to firm with many hay producers reporting limited inventories.

Northeast: Premium/supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $240-$265; good/premium, $220-$240; fair/good, $180-$210, $220-$250 delivered; Utility/fair, $160-$180, $200-$220 delivered. Premium, in small squares, $265-$290; good, $200-$235; fair, $165-$200. Premium grass, in large squares, $180-$200, in small squares, $290-$360; good, $220-$265; fair, $165-$200. Premium alfalfa-grass, in small squares, $250-$265. Straw, in large squares, $70-$80, $85-$100 delivered. Oat, in large squares, $135. Millet, in large squares, $120-$135. Corn stalks, in large squares, $60-$70, $70-$80 delivered. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.

Southeast: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, instances $330-$350; premium, in small squares, $300; good/premium, $280-$300; good, $250. Premium sorghum-sudan, in large squares, $175-$190; good, $150-$175. Straw, in large squares, $80-$90. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.

San Luis Valley: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $290-$300; premium, $260-$285, in small squares, $265-$300; good/premium, $230-$260; fair/good, $210-$230. Premium grass, in large squares, $180-$200; good, $140-$160. Premium oat hay, in large squares, $185-$200. Straw, in large squares, $100-$115. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.

Southwest: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $290-$300; premium, $260-$285, in small squares, $230-$265; good/premium, $230-$260; fair, $165-$175; fair/good, $210-$230. Premium grass, in large squares, $170-$190, in small squares, $230-$260; good, $200-$230. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.

Mountains/northwest: Premium alfalfa, in large squares, $190-$220, in small squares, $230; fair/good, $160-$180; good, $180-$210. Premium grass, in large squares, $180-$200, in small squares, $200-$230; good, $160-$180; good, $165-$180; fair, $140-$160. Fair/utility, in large rounds, $130-$150. No reported quotes for other classes of hay.

In Missouri, hay demand within the state has softened. Prices for hay are steady to firm.

Fair/good alfalfa, RFV 130-170 $150-$250. Good mixed alfalfa-grass, $100-$185. Good/premium brome, $150-$200; good brome, $100-$135. Fair brome mixed with grass, $75-$125. Good/premium mixed grass hay, $100-$180; good mixed grass hay, $85-$130; fair/good mixed grass hay, $50-$85. Good bermuda grass, $125-$275; fair/good bermuda grass, $100-$150. Wheat straw, in small squares, $3-$6/bale. Corn stalks, in large rounds, $25-$35/bale.

In Oklahoma, the hay trade was slow to moderate and movement moderate. Demand very good for dairy quality alfalfa, moderate to good for other offerings.

Central: Prices mostly steady. Premium alfalfa, in large squares, delivered, $280-$340; good, squares and round bales delivered $260-$280. Fair in rounds, $230-$250. Most hay sold based on RFV at mostly $1-$1.10 per point plus delivery. Horse hay, in small squares, $320-$360. Prices steady. Good bermuda grass hay, in large round bales, $100-$130/bale on 5 X 6 bales; good native grass, in large round bales, $80-$90/bale. Prairie hay delivered from out of state, $180-$210/ton. Mixed grass hay delivered, $175-$200/ton. Bermuda-bermuda mix, in small square bales, $8-$9/bale.

Eastern: Prices firm. Premium alfalfa, in large square bales, not tested. Good, in large rounds, $250-$280 delivered, in small square bales, $10-$12/bale. Prices steady. Good bermuda grass hay, $110-$130 by the bale (5X6), prairie hay, in large round bales, $80-$90/bale.

Western: Premium alfalfa, in large square bales at edge of field, $280-$305. Good, in square and round bales, edge of field, $230-$250. Grinding hay at edge of field, $225-$230. Good quality prairie grass hay delivered, $200-$210. Good grass hay delivered, $200-$210. Good wheat hay, $135/bale. Corn stalks, $90-$95. Soybean stalks, $160-$165.

In Texas, hay prices are steady. Hay prices very little changed this week, however supplies remained very hard to find. Hay quality has become a large concern as high quality kinds limited and hard to find even though price tends rise.

Panhandle: Premium/supreme alfalfa, in small squares, delivered, $330-$395, $10-$12/bale, in large squares, delivered, $300-$350; good/premium, $270-$330, $8-$10/bale; good/premium, $275-$300; fair/good, $250-$280. Mixed grass-alfalfa, delivered, in large bales, $225-$275. Ground and delivered, north, $300-$315; south, $315-$330. Chopped CRP-alfalfa mix, delivered, $240-$260. CRP grass, in large bales, delivered, $130-$140. Prairie hay, in large rounds, delivered, $260-$270. Blue Gramma grass, $180-$190 laid down in field. Cotton seed hulls, in large rounds, $350.

West: Premium/supreme alfalfa, in small squares, delivered, $330-$395, $10-$11/bale, in large squares, delivered, $300-$350; good/premium, $270-$330, $9-$10/bale; good/premium, $275-$300; fair/good, $250-$275. Millet hay, in large squares, delivered, $220. Corn stovers, in large rounds, delivered, $125. Hay grazer, in large rounds, FOB, $225.
