Tulia livestock auction reportThe Tulia Livestock Auction Inc., Tulia, Texas, reported receipts of 1,369 head Jan. 26, compared to 2,036 head last week and 3,639 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Amarillo, Texas. Compared last week, feeder steers and heifers sold $1 to $5 higher. Steer calves were mostly steady. Heifer calves sold $5 to $10 higher, with increased buyer demand for Medium and large frame 1, weighing between 400 to 550 pounds. Some of the aftermaths of this summer's drought are now becoming notable in the yearling trade. As the large amount of calves that were sent to growyards early this summer are now showing back up at auction barns at weights of 600 to 850 pounds and carrying a considerable amount of flesh. However, record high prices and concerns about upcoming supplies of yearling cattle has minimized the discounts normally realized for fleshy type cattle. Slaughter cows were $1 to $2 higher, with limited test on slaughter bulls. Trade and demand good. Slaughter cows and bulls made up 5% of the offering, replacement cows 0% and feeders 95%. The feeder supply included 60% steers, 0% bulls, and 40% heifers, with nearly 65% of the run over 600 pounds.
