Kansas

Those who plan to conduct a prescribed burn in Russell County need to have a burn permit and one of the requirements is to have attended an Extension Prescribed Burn School. Russell County Extension and our partners Russell County Conservation District and Russell County FSA Office will host a burn school Feb. 29 at the 4-H Building in Russell from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Kevin Ochs will tell about the Farm Service Agency changes for 2012. Keith Harmoney, K-State Range Scientist, and Toni Flax, Natural Resources Conservation Service Range Conservation, will use a sandbox to to demonstrate planning for a burn. Carol Blocksom, K-State prescribed burn specialist, will give a presentation on weather conditions.

Matt Smith of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will tell about the advantages and disadvantages of burns on wildlife.

The noon meal is courtesy of Black Gold Pheasants Forever. There will be a $5 workbook fee. Call the Russell County Extension Office at 785-483-3157 or email driscoll@ksu.edu to register by Feb. 24. We must have 10 people pre-registered to hold the class.
