Hay trade slow to moderate

In Kansas, hay trade slow to moderate. Demand moderate to strong for dairy, stock cow, grinding alfalfa, grass hay and alfalfa pellets, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jan. 31. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest: Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $300-$325; supreme dairy, $270-$310, an instance $350 for supplemental hay; premium, $250-$290; heifer or bunk hay, $240-$270; A little new crop alfalfa contracted, $200 standing in the field, all cuttings. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, edge of the field or shipped in, $230-$250. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies $260-$280. For the week ending Jan. 28, 8,759 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,175 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Straw, in large bales, $65-$75, $80-$90 delivered. CRP grass in large bales $100, best $130. Bermuda, good, $280. Sudan, good, in large bales, $120-$150. Corn stalks, $65-$70, or $80-$100 delivered, ground and delivered $90-$130. Soybean stalks, $90-$100 delivered.

South central: Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady, alfalfa pellets steady. Movement moderate to active. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $260-$300, instance $325; premium, $230-$270; fair/good grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $200-$230. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $225-$255. For the week ending Jan. 28, 4,356 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,175 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15 and 17% protein, $280-$295; Dehydrated 17% $305. Straw, in large bales, $60-$75. Corn hay, $80-$100. Corn stalks, $65-$70. Sudan, good, in large bales, $125-$130.

Southeast: Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement moderate. Horse and goat alfalfa, in medium squares, $250; Dairy, $250-$260, an instance, $300; Bluestem, good, in small squares, $100-$130, in medium and large squares, $100-$125, some to $130, in large rounds, $80-$95, instances $100-$110. Brome, good, in small squares, $110-$130, in medium and large squares, $100-$110, in large rounds, $80-$100. Grass mulch CWF, in large rounds, $60. Straw, in large bales, $60-$65. Corn hay, $100, $150 with low Nitrates. Sudan, good, in large bales, $125. Soybean hay, good, in large bales, $125.

Northwest: Grinding alfalfa steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, $250; Dairy, no trade. Stock Cow, good $200; fair/good grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $180-$220, an instance $230; ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies, $205-$250. CRP grass, in large bales, $80-$100, some good, $125. Sudan, good, in large bales, $125-$130. Corn stalks, $55-$65.

North central/northeast: Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, $280-$300, some $7.50-$8/small square bale; supreme dairy, $250-$300, an instance $350 for Supplemental hay; premium, $230-$270; Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $180-$220, alfalfa ground on truck, $200-$250, ground and delivered, $225- $250. Good bluestem grass hay, in small squares, $5-$6.50/bale, $100-$125, in medium squares, $100-$140, in large rounds, $40-$45/bale, $70-$100/ton, $110 delivered. Brome, good, in small squares, $6.50-$8/bale, $110-$150/ton, in medium squares, $110-$150, in large rounds, $50/bale, $75-$100/ton. Grass mulch, in large rounds, $50-60, CWF, in large rounds, $95-$100. Straw, in small squares $3.50/bale or $4/bale delivered, in large bales $60-$70/ton or $70-$75 delivered. Soybean hay, good, in large bales, $120-$160. Soybean stalks, in large bales, $70. Cornstalks ground and delivered, $100. Milo stalks, in large rounds, $65-$75.
