Grandin among scientists, experts and horse industry leaders at 2nd International Summit of the Horse

United Horsemen will host the 2nd International Summit of the Horse April 2 to 5 in Oklahoma City, Okla. This second historic gathering of the horse industry featuring scientists, experts, and stakeholders is focused on "Building a Better Future for Horses and Horse People."

The Summit will open April 2, with a reception, performance, and dance featuring Wylie and the Wild West at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. The Opening Reception will include a fundraising auction facilitated by TotalHorseMarketing.com who will also be providing live webcasts of the entire Summit proceedings for interested people unable to attend in person.

The bulk of the Summit will be held at Embassy Suites at Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma City. Trent Loos, well known radio personality and advocate for production animal agriculture will once again serve as the Master of Ceremonies and moderator for the entire Summit.

On April 3, the proceedings will be kicked off with a keynote address from former U.S. Congressman from Texas, Charlie Stenholm, "Politics of Land and Horses," taking a fresh look at the significant changes that have occurred since he provided the same perspective at the first Summit of the Horse that was held in Las Vegas in early January of 2011. Stenholm will focus on the political landscape as we move forward. Following Stenholm's address will be The Horsemen's Forum featuring a number of horse industry leaders from diverse disciplines all speaking about what is necessary, from their perspective, to build a better future for the horse world.

On April 3, will be a block of time devoted to a look at "What is Necessary to Responsibly Manage Wild Horses on Tribal, State, and Private Lands," addressing the problems associated with horse management that is not the responsibility of the federal Bureau of Land Management. Jason Smith, Chairman of the National Tribal Horse Coalition will be among the voices speaking to this issue. The afternoon will also include a panel that includes the perspective of ranchers and range managers dealing with the chronic and excessive inability to maintain appropriate management levels on federal horse management areas. Chuck Sylvester will be talking about problems on the Granite Mountain Allottment in Wyoming, Dave Robertson from Colorado, and John Falen, rancher and current Chairman of the Public Lands Council will round out the panel which will also include Callie Hendrickson from the Colorado Association of Conservation Districts.

The keynote address April 4, will feature renowned scientist, Dr. Temple Grandin of Colorado State University speaking about "Humane Horse Handling." Dr. Grandin's participation is once again being generously sponsored by Rhodes River Ranch. The rest of the morning will be dedicated to the introduction, explanation, and demonstration of a suite of technology solutions that are being implemented throughout the re-emerging horse processing industry to ensure continuing high standards of humane handling of horses at every stage, as well as food safety and quality with scientifically valid testing, inspection, and third party monitoring and audit systems.

On April 4 during the after noon, events will be dedicated to strategies and tools to effectively communicate with and inform policy makers and the public, as well as how horse owners can protect themselves from animal activist attacks. The afternoon begins with an address from Kevin Murphy, Food Chain Communications, talking about the "Moral-Ethical Implications of the Horse Processing Debate--How it Will Be Framed to the Public--How You Can Respond." Also included in the afternoon will be Mindy Patterson, president and co-founder of The Cavalry Group speaking to "Defending Your Private Property Rights and Going on the Offensive Against the Animal Rights Movement."

The 2nd International Summit of the Horse will conclude by noon April 5. The morning will include addresses from Dr. Mykel Taylor, assistant professor, Department of Agricultural Economics, Kansas State University on her research, "The Impacts of Policy and Macroeconomic Conditions on Horse Markets," which has evolved out of her initial work, some of which was incorporated into the GAO Report on "HORSE WELFARE: Action Needed to Address the Unintended Consequences of Domestic Slaughter Cessation." The GAO Report was an eighteen month nation-wide study of the direct consequences of U.S. horse plant being closed that clearly documented the steep decline in horse welfare, and the severe negative economic impacts to the overall horse industry that resulted. Also speaking on Thursday morning will be Olivier Kemseke, General Manager and International Sales and Production, Chevideco, a multi-national third generation family business that is a leader in the European horse meat industry. Kemseke will be providing an overview and a worldwide economic outlook for the horse harvesting industry. Summit attendees will hear from other horse and agriculture industry leaders in the morning April 5, and wrap up with a recap and the trail forward message based on the proceedings of the Summit by Steve Kopperud. Kopperud is the coordinator of the Farm Animal Welfare Coalition, and is the head of the new Washington, D.C. office for the International Equine Business Association.

the only unwanted horses are those bred by the aqha and the race industry when the horse is not longer needed or profitable. the real horsemen and women of this country are not in favor of equine slaughter. this is proved over and over agin in every poll that has been taken yet "united horsemen" stouts only one side, the money side. shame on your use of the word "horse" as part of your publication is misleading, only money motivates your position.

I Am Sure In Your Heart of Hearts You Do Realize That These Are God's Precious Creations, Just As We Are! In the Bible He Gives Us "Stewardship" (Which Is A Far Cry From "Dominance") Over His Creations. We Have A Responsibility To Take Proper Care Of Each Other, The Animals (Who Cannot Speak For Themselves) And All Of Our Earth. It Is To Our Own Advantage, As Well, To Keep Protecting Our Earth And The Animals For The Purpose Of Our Own Existence, For Without THEM, There Will Be No "Us!" The "Delicate (May I Emphasis "Delicate") Balance Of Nature/Eco-Systems" (Of Which We Are A Major Part) Must Be Dealt With Very Carefully, With A Compassionate Heart, Moral Conviction And Complete Common Sense! I Beg Of You To Pray About Your Choices, And Then Do As Your God Given Conscience Guides You. There Is Way Too Much Cruelty In This World As It Is! Man Is The Ultimate And Most Destructive Predator! Here Is Your Chance And Your Obligation, To Make A Positive Difference In Every One's Lives, Especially Our Wonderful And Beautiful Fellow Inhabitants, All The Animals. How Can We Face The Future With Animals Becoming Extinct In Rapid Numbers In Our Lifetime Or Animals Being Neglected, Abused, Tortured And Murdered? This Is Mostly Caused By Many Evil People Who Are Obsessed With Insatiable Greed, Self-Centeredness And Selfish Ambition. The Reality Is Frightening! How Are We Going To Be Able To Look Our Children And Grandchildren (Including Future Generations) In The Eyes And Then Explain To Them That It Is OUR Fault That We Allowed This To Happen? Do You Not Think They Will Fault Us For Being So Selfish And/Or Complacent About The Wellbeing Of God’s Gifts And Blessings To Us (And This Goes For Humans, As Well) As We ALL Suffer The Consequences Of Our Actions Or Lack Of Action? The History Of Mankind (Although Man Has Been Scarcely Kind To Them) Has Been Linked Hand And Hoof With Horses, Mules, Burros And Donkeys. The Path Of Civilization Is Laid On The Bones Of Equines. “From Sea To Shining Sea” (As Sung In The Song “Oh, Beautiful,” Which Is About America) Would Have Been A Long, Difficult, Arduous And Impossible Walk Without Them! They Have Enhanced Our Lives In So Many Ways That It Is Impossible To Put It All Into Words In This Format. I Cannot Imagine What Our World Would Be Like Without Them, Especially The Wild Equines. We/You Owe It To ALL Horses, Mules, Burros And Donkeys To Protect Them By ALL Means Possible, At ALL Costs And Nothing Less. God Will Bless You For Being An Angel Of Mercy For His Precious Creations And A Blessing To Others So You WILL Bless More Abundantly In His Holy Name! Amen!

In 2013 most horses will be ineligible for slaughter due to new restrictions. What happens then? Temple Grandin may support this monstrocity but in my eyes that makes her less of an animal advocate than she claims to be and more of an abusser for okaying these inhumane actions. Horse slaughter is NOT humane. Each slaughter house is allowed a 15% error rate. Temple Grandin's APPROVED slaughter house had over double that! So yea.. let's all listen to her.

I am disturbed this event is coming to my home state of Oklahoma. I watched the videos from the Summit of the Horse when it was held in Vegas, and I was shocked to find out how many of these people are FOR killing our horses via slaughter! I thought the Summit of the Horse and United Horsemen was supposed to be about protecting and caring for our horses. I thought it was going to be about finding solutions that involved the horses we already have, and not killing them so we could breed more and make money off the dead ones. The fear mongering and the intense focus on killing and marketing slaughtered horses will not save the ones that continue to drop on the ground as registered foals each year. Again I am upset the Summit is coming to my home State of OKlahoma. It may be time to drive back down there from Colorado to find out what's going on. But before I do, micro-chipping my horses is the first agenda.

Airspace1 you are right about 1 thing, people NOT having and money or jobs is the major reason horses are staving, there needs to be a way that these people without jobs can dispose of there horses and make some money to help feed there own familes,if the horse is put down by the vet and buried by a backhoe that is taking money from the already jobless person trying to feed there familes. If they can sell that horse for slaughter and make a little money it will help them pay bills and put food on the table. And whos to say that horse wouldn't have died a natural painful death from colic later on anyway. As much as someone trys to keep a horse from having any pain, colic gets most of them and it's very painful.A quick death at a slaughterhouse would be better.

This April Fools month will the meeting of all. Every pro slaughter fool will be there. This has NOTHING to help horse world. The only thing ever to help the horse world is JOBS in America. NOT horse slaughter houses for Americans. The only ones to cash in on this black market are the ones that should NOT even own a horse. To say slaughter some and worshit others is foolish. The answer STOP BREEDING out of control and have these breeders regulated and taxed as a fee for horse rescues. NONE of these pro slaughter organizations give back to these horse rescues because it costs them money. These people are the scum of the earth. STOP slaughter by stopping the incentives. Horse slaughter is merely a reward of criminals and irresponsible people period..
