Meditation for 2-6-12

Read Matthew 10:29-31

The Lord says, "See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands."

--Isaiah 49:16 (NIV)

For many years, my wife and I planned our dream trip to the Pacific Northwest after we retired from teaching. In June 2006, the dream came true. On a cliff overlooking the magnificent Oregon coast and the Pacific Ocean, we stood silent. We felt small compared to the beauty of the coast, the clear blue water breaking on the rocky cliffs topped with green, the vast ocean stretching to the horizion, and the majesty of the Master's hand in creating the vista before us. My wife, Augusta, commented, "You know, we are only mere specks on this earth."

As we continued our drive down the Oregon coast, I was thinking about my wife's comment. John 3:16 came to mind: "God so loved the world that he gave his only son." I said to my wife, "We might be insignificant specks, but God loved us enough to send his son to die for us."

Since that moment of revelation, whenever I feel lost, troubled, or runover by the world--when I feel like and insignificant speck--I remember who made me and loves me. We are engraved on the palms of God's hands, and there is no better place to be.

PRAYER

Divine Creator, when we feel small and insignificant, help us to remember that you made us and that you loved us enough to send your only son for our redemption. Amen.

Thought for the Day

The cross is a picture of how far God goes to redeem us.
