Colorado Corn honors legislator, Beef Battalion, others
Colorado State Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg was named as the Legislator of the Year as he and others were honored recently at the 2012 Colorado Corn Annual Banquet in Loveland, for their hard work on behalf of agriculture. Sonnenberg, the lone working farmer in the Colorado House, said working on behalf of corn growers was easy because his values match up well. Newly appointed Public Policy Chair Rick Palkowitsh presented the award, saying, "From tax policy to transportation issues, property rights to water supply challenges, Rep. Jerry Sonnenberg continues to be a strong voice for agriculture." Other awards presented include the following. Company of the Year--The All American Beef Battalion, a national organization that provides steak dinners for all deploying and returning U.S. armed forces Colorado Corn has donated $30,000 and many members have volunteered to serve at feeds at Fort Carson. Colorado Corn Board Member Mike Lefever of La Salle said, "As someone who hasn't missed a feed in Colorado in two and a half years, I can tell you, it is a life-changing and very humbling experience to get a thank you from a soldier who has put his or her life on the line to defend your freedom." Beef Battalion Founder Bill Broadie accepted the award and said Colorado Corn has been one of the biggest supporters of this effort nationwide. Amicus-Friend of Agriculture Award--Lorrie Boyer. former Colorado Corn Growers Association president Trent Bushner of Yuma praised Boyer for her fair and accurate reporting of agriculture during her time in radio on KSIR in Fort Morgan and stations in Lamar as well as her own Colorado Agriculture News Network. Jean Sirios-President's Award--Loren Martin of Windsor. Outgoing CCGA President Byron Weathers praised Martin for his years of service on the Safety Committee. "Farming continues to be a risky business in this country, but it's impossible to know how many accidents may have happened--that didn't--due in some part to the work of this organization's outreach through the Safety Committee under Loren's leadership." The Colorado Corn Growers Association and Colorado Corn Administrative Committee work on behalf of more than 4,000 corn producers through market development, communications, research, and technical assistance.
