USDA encourages producers to apply for Grasslands Reserve Program

Oklahoma

Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Francie Tolle and Natural Resources Conservation Service State Conservationist Ron Hilliard, encourage producers to apply for the 2012 Grasslands Reserve Program. All GRP applications received at the local Farm Service Agency or Natural Resources Conservation Service office by Feb. 3 will be considered for the $1.25 million allocation received for the 2012 GRP. Applications received by this date will be evaluated based on a ranking criterion for a 10-, 15-, or 20-year contract. Successful applicants will receive an annual rental payment per acre for the length of the contract. Rental rates in Oklahoma range from $6 to $11.50 per acre. Program participants may continue to graze, hay, or seed the pastureland offered according to a conservation plan and receive the annual benefit.

The Grassland Reserve Program is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance grasslands on their property. The NRCS and FSA coordinate implementation of GRP. The program will conserve vulnerable grasslands from conversion to cropland or other uses and conserve valuable grasslands by helping maintain viable ranching operations resulting in clean water, healthier riparian areas, reduced sedimentation in streams and other water bodies, soil erosion protection and maintain healthy wildlife populations.

FSA and NRCS has offices throughout Oklahoma; local offices are listed in the United States Government section of the phone book or can be found by visiting FSA online at www.fsa.usda.gov/ok or NRCS online at www.ok.nrcs.usda.gov/contact/index.html .
