K-State animal science icon passes away

Kansas

Former Kansas State University Animal Sciences & Industry Department Head Don Good passed away Feb. 14 in Manhattan. Good led the department from 1966 to 1987.

"Good was known as a builder of the individual, a strong supporter of land-grant research and an exemplary judge of beef cattle," wrote K-State Animal Science Professor Emeritus Miles McKee in a book chronicling the history of the department.

He is well-known for naming a crossbred steer as grand champion at the 1969 Chicago International Livestock Show. This event led to changes in genetic selection from small-framed cattle to larger, performance-oriented animals.

Good led the department through recovery from a destructive tornado, a merger of departments and major renovations at Weber Hall. As a result of the tornado damage, Good, working with livestock producers, formed the Livestock and Meat Industry Council to raise funds for rebuilding animal science facilities.

KLA Executive Vice President Dee Likes called Good "an icon" who was respected not only in Kansas, but nationally, as an educator and livestock judge.

"Don mentored thousands of young stockmen and women and guided them on a successful course in their careers," said Likes. "Nearly everyone whose privilege it was to be acquainted with him was influenced by his energetic optimism and forward vision."
