UW graduate students unravel wind energy mechanicsWyoming Heather Sauder and George Randolph, both in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, won the 2011 Energy Education for the People writing contest and received $1,000 for their entry "Is Wind Energy Right for Me?" The annual competition seeks entries about small renewable energy and energy efficiency applicable to Wyoming residents. It's sponsored by the University of Wyoming Extension with support from the Wind Energy Research Center and the School of Energy Resources. "Both the excellence and quantity of this year's submissions is a testament to the diverse knowledge of UW students," said Milt Geiger, UW Extension energy coordinator and contest organizer. "Entries ranged from small wind to solar heating and cooling. The winning entry in particular offered a unique perspective on the quality of Wyoming's small wind resource." Randolph, from Elkhart, Ind., is in the Department of Atmospheric Science under the direction of professor Tom Parish. Sauder, from Corrales, N.M., is in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and is advised by associate professor Jonathan Naughton. Assistant professor Ben Rashford in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics will help students convert information into the extension bulletin format. "The competition is a unique way to fulfill UW's Extension mission," said Rashford. "Instead of the traditional approach of directly taking knowledge from UW's scientists to the people, this competition brings the classroom and student into the mix--scientist to student to people. It merges the three-tiers (teaching, research, outreach) of UW's mission to everyone's benefit."
