ASI state membership contest winner announcedArkansas State Sheep Council and South Dakota Sheep Growers Association have been named this year's winners of the American Sheep Industry Association's state membership contest. Initially approved in 2004 at the ASI convention, the state membership contest has been offered as an annual incentive to increase participation at the state level. The award is given to the states with the largest percentage increase in members. Two categories are awarded--states with annual dues of $2,000 or less and state with annual dues of more than $2,000. The winning states receive a free registration to the American Sheep Industry convention. The Arkansas association logged a 50 percent increase in membership for states with $2,000 or less annual dues. South Dakota recorded a 62-percent membership increase in the larger dues category. Total sheep producer association membership as of May 31, was up 2 percent over the prior year. This includes the members of the Rhode Island Sheep Cooperative, who rejoined ASI in 2012.
