ASSC hosts National Shearing Competition

The American Sheep Shearers Council is hosting the National Sheep Shearing Competition at the Convention Center in Rapids City, S.D., on Jan. 27, 2013, in conjunction with the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo. A wool handling contest has been added this year and will follow the shearing finals.

The contest is an exciting event highlighting the working practice of sheep shearing. The competition is judged on time and safety of the animal. A demonstration of the technical aspects of shearing a mature sheep along with a narrative describing the events to ensure the safety and the well being of the animal will be provided prior to the competition.

ASSC will hold its annual business meeting on Jan. 26, 2013, beginning at 3 p.m. followed by dinner. The shearing contest starts at 9 a.m. on Jan. 27.

Shearers are encouraged to contact Leann Brimmer at 406-853-4867 to pre-register for both the dinner and the contest.

Watch men and women compete for bragging rights as the nation's fastest sheep shearer. The event is free to the public.
