Rangeland management program offered in HaysKansas Drought is unfortunately a natural part of the climate in the Great Plains. The current drought in western Kansas is the most severe since the drought of the 1950s. Most of western Kansas is currently in a one-in-50-year drought, and the rest is in a one-in-20-year drought. Come learn from rangeland specialists what you can do to further your drought management plan, or develop one if you haven't already. Topics of discussion will be stocking rates, drought management, research on overgrazed grasses in Kansas, rangeland chemical use, a panel discussion by area ranchers, and time for your questions. Speakers will be David Kraft and Roger Tacha, rangeland and resource specialists with Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Keith Harmoney, range specialist with Hays Ag Research Center. The County Conservation District Committees of Ellis, Russell, and Trego counties, along with K-State Research and Extension are offering a Rangeland Health Management program on Jan. 7, 2013, at the Hays Ag Research Center Auditorium. The program will start at 11 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. with a free noon meal, courtesy of the County Conservation Districts, DuPont, and Dow.
