Powell commercial driver license study group set for January

Wyoming

University of Wyoming Extension and Northwest College are offering a free commercial driver license study group in Powell.

The study group meets 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 7 to 11, 2013, in the multi-purpose room at the Park County Fairgrounds. A brochure about the study group is at http://bit.ly/ZdvsNu.

"The state of Wyoming enforces the class of license regulations, even if you are a farmer driving your product within 150 miles of your farm," said Sandra Frost, UW Extension educator. "If the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating or the actual weight is more than 26,001 pounds, the driver should have the appropriate class of license for that vehicle. If the gross vehicle weight rating or actual weight is more than 55,000 pounds, the vehicle is automatically a commercial vehicle and a commercial vehicle license is required."

The morning sessions cover the Wyoming Driver License Manual for Commercial and Heavy Vehicles. Class B and air brake information is covered Monday to Wednesday. Class A information will be covered Monday to Friday. Northwest College is providing lunch each day for participants.

"The goal of the study group is to prepare participants for the written and vehicle inspection tests," said Frost. "The class does not include driving practice."

After lunch, participants will learn and practice truck inspection.

"The Wyoming Highway Patrol is participating by sending a motor carrier trooper to share information with the class," said Frost. "The Powell Volunteer Fire Department will discuss hazardous materials."

Study materials are provided. Participants will be directed to regional resources and review instructional materials provided by the Wyoming Department of Transportation. Local farmers and ranchers will assist participants with the hands-on, practical aspects of learning.

To register for the CDL study group or for more information, contact Frost at 307-754-8836 or email her at sfrost1@uwyo.edu.
