YSA class completes a year of education

Kansas

The seventh class of the Kansas Livestock Association Young Stockmen's Academy graduated Nov. 30 in Wichita. Vista from Merck Animal Health partnered with KLA to host 20 young members for a series of four seminars throughout 2012. Attending the KLA Convention was the final session. YSA members earned their Masters of Beef Advocacy degrees following an in-depth training session led by NCBA Executive Director of Communications Daren Williams. The group also attended the KLA Chairmen's Circle meeting this afternoon. YSA members took part in the policy process by participating in committee and council meetings.

During the first session in February, attendees were exposed to advocacy training, the legislative process and services provided by KLA. The second installment took the group to Kansas City in June, where they learned about the agribusiness and retail beef industries. YSA members went to western Kansas in October to tour beef and dairy operations.

The 2012 graduating class includes Shea Baird, Levant; Beau Beyer, Le Roy; Tyler Breeden, Quinter; Brett Brownback, Centerville; Brandi Buzzard, Manhattan; Lance Cline, Onaga; Bo Downing, Longton; Calder Keller, Oakley; Tyler Leonhard, Beatrice, Neb.; Leanne Litton, Glasco; Drew Obermeyer, Marysville; Kyra O'Brien, Hepler; Alycia Penewit, Satanta; Wyatt Rundel, Wichita; Garrett Schultz, Manhattan; Nathan Simmons, Hesston; Sam States, Logan; Kiley Stinson, Allen; Andrea Stroberg, Manhattan; and Chelsea Townsend, Larned.

This year's class brings the total number of YSA graduates to 139. YSA alumni will meet during this week's KLA Convention for a reception.

Applications for the 2013 YSA class now are being accepted and are available at the KLA booth in the convention trade show. The deadline for applications is Dec. 17.
