Brahman breeders hold convention

The second annual American Brahman Breeders Association Membership Convention was held Nov. 16 and 17 at Moody Gardens Hotel and Spa in Galveston, Texas. The convention highlighted aspects of the beef industry important to Brahman enthusiasts, and encouraged fellowship amongst the country's Brahman breeders.

More than 100 Brahman breeders and friends arrived in Galveston on Nov. 16 to enjoy a social cocktail hour that provided a meet and greet scavenger hunt.

The following day, Dave Pratt, with Ranch Management Consultants, LCC, kicked off the general session with an interactive presentation based on the nationally renowned, "Ranching for Profit" school. The general session was met with enthusiasm.

Afternoon breakout sessions focused on factors relevant to the cattle industry and to the production of Brahman and Brahman F-1 cattle. Sessions were well-received, including a hands-on live cattle demonstration that featured adding value to herds.

Youth breakout sessions were also provided for the first time ever, and included an American Junior Brahman Association overview, a leadership workshop and an agriculture advocacy presentation.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo President Skip Wagner presented the closing ceremony address following a banquet- style meal and recognition of the convention's sponsors. The live DJ provided entertainment and dancing to conclude the evening.

The ABBA Membership Convention is an annual event that brings together the country's Brahman breeders and friends. It was initiated to provide a forum for camaraderie and education, and each of its events, from the opening cocktail and scavenger hunt, to the general session, was designed with these goals in mind.

The ABBA and hosting affiliate, the Deep South Brahman Association, are in the planning stages of the 2013 ABBA Membership Convention. Details on location and dates will be announced in the coming months.

The American Brahman Breeders Association is the world registry for Brahman cattle, the No. 1 beef breed for efficiency, hybrid vigor and environmental adaptability. For more information on the ABBA visit www.brahman.org.
