Scholarship endowment exceeds funding goalsIowa The Mark Pearson Memorial Scholarship has reached its $25,000 endowment goal, thanks to the generous support of the agricultural community. The fund drive was initiated by the Cattlemen's Beef Quarters as a way to honor the popular farm broadcaster for his contributions to the agriculture industry. "Utilizing his infectious sense of humor, gregarious nature and remarkable knowledge of agriculture, Mark was able to reach and engage both farmers and consumers," said John Mortimer, president of Beef Promotions of Iowa, which manages the Cattlemen's Beef Quarters. "We lost a loyal agriculture advocate. This scholarship is a way of honoring Mark's contributions by assisting students who plan a career in some aspect of farm broadcasting." The scholarship will be awarded annually through the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement to a college junior or senior student who is majoring in communications or journalism with an emphasis on agriculture. The first scholarship will be awarded during the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Pearson, who passed away unexpectedly in June, was the host of the WHO Big Show and Iowa Public Television's Market to Market program. Throughout the years, he has been a popular speaker at thousands of farm, business, and financial meetings across the country. A true ambassador for rural America, Pearson had an uncommon ability to bridge the gap between rural and urban Americans. Donations are still being accepted and can be made payable to the Mark Pearson Endowment FunD and sent to John Mortimer, Beef Promotions of Iowa, 2430 240th Street, Dallas Center, IA 50063.
