Barber named Ark extension weed specialistArkansas Tom Barber has a new title with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture: weed scientist. Barber, 36, earned his Ph.D. in weed science from Mississippi State and his masters' degree in the same subject from the University of Arkansas. He has been serving as an Extension cotton agronomist for Arkansas since 2007 and was this year's Beltwide Cotton Conference Cotton Specialist of the Year. As a weed scientist, he'll be working on all row crops, but will focus on cotton and corn. "I am looking forward in getting back to a discipline of my training and with multiple crops and technologies," Barber said. "This is an exciting time for weed science with introduction of new technologies and products and the many issues regarding resistance in weeds." Barber said he would "approach this job as I did my other one with the Arkansas producers and consultants as my key clientele, I will do whatever I can to help them remain competitive and profitable in a global agriculture environment." Barber can be reached at tbarber@uaex.edu, or 501-671-2186. Date: 12/24/2012
