Beef conference to help producers improve profitsMissouri University of Missouri Extension will host the Fourth Annual Southwest Missouri Beef Conference starting at 4 p.m., Oct. 25 at the Citizens Memorial Hospital community rooms in Bolivar, Mo. "Beef producers have experienced a wild ride the last few years with volatile input prices on feed, fuel, and fertilizer, and fluctuating cattle prices. Unfortunately, volatility is here to stay and will be the name of the game for quite some time," said Wesley Tucker, agriculture business specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Tucker says each topic at this year's conference have been individually selected based on the needs in the local area. "Through this conference we hope to provide producers with practical management tips they can utilize to focus on improving the profitability of their operations," said Tucker. "Anyone in southwest Missouri that's interested in actually making money in the cattle business is welcome to attend." Presentations will be given by Rob Kallenbach, Ph.D., state forage specialist with MU Extension, on "Stretching Limited Hay Supplies." Dr. Craig Payne, DVM, and MU beef veterinary medicine specialist, will give an update on the spread of trichomoniasis and the state regulations for bull testing that took effect Sept. 1. Scott Brown will address the "Changing Structure of the Beef Industry" and how $8 corn is going to change the way we market our cattle. Will McClain will be talk about "Can We Afford to Fertilize?" in the coming year. Sen. Mike Parson and Rep. Sue Entlicher will be discussing "Legislative Issues Facing Animal Agriculture" in the near future. The cost for producers wanted to attend the conference is $5 per person which includes a beef dinner for those who register by Oct. 20.
