Food for Thought to feature Miss America Teresa Scanlan


Miss America 2011, Teresa Scanlan, will speak about "Agriculture in America Today" at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 in McCain Auditorium on the Kansas State University campus as the fall presenter in the Upson Lecture Series. The event is free, and seating is first come, first served. Those who attend the lecture are encouraged to bring canned goods to the event, and the items will be donated to the Flint Hills Breadbasket. The Food for Thought series was established in 2010, as Food For Thought aspired to bring lectures onto K-State's campus that both educate the general public about agriculture and bring together people from across the College of Agriculture, the College of Veterinary Medicine and the agriculture industry. In honor of Dr. Dan Upson, DVM, Ph.D. and his commitment to the agriculture industry, FFT named the lecture series after him. FFT aims to host an Upson lecture speaker each semester with a target of bringing in well-known speakers with the potential to educate about agriculture and influence public opinion.

Upson presented the first FFT lecture titled "Efficient Use of Earth's Resources: Providing Food for the World's People" on Feb. 23, 2010. The event overflowed Frick Auditorium and attendees learned about the importance of cattle as part of a sustainable plan to feed a hungry world. Temple Grandin, Ph.D., spoke in fall 2010. Grandin is a designer of livestock handling facilities and a professor of animal science at Colorado State University. She is also the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. She delivered a university-wide speech at K-State about her experiences with autism and her career in animal welfare. Sen. Jerry Moran spoke in the spring of 2011 about current issues facing the agriculture industry and reaffirmed his longtime support for agriculture education. Raised in Plainville, Kan., Moran is a leading advocate in the U.S. Senate for protecting and preserving the special way of life in Kansas. Food for Thought is a group of Kansas State University students working to bridge the gap between agriculture and consumers. The grassroots group was started by students coming together to discuss ways to meet the challenges of misconceptions about an agriculture industry removed from its urban consumers. The group includes undergraduate, graduate and veterinary students, as well as young alumni, working under the guidance of faculty advisor Dr. Dan Thomson, the director of K-State's Beef Cattle Institute. Mission Statement: FFT will provide consumers with answers about where their food comes from by empowering agriculturalists, informing consumers, and confronting myths about modern agriculture through innovative and effective methods.
