Joplin regional cattle sales reportThe Joplin Regional Stockyards, Joplin, Mo., reported receipts of 2,220 head May 23, compared to 5,390 head last week and 6,347 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, calves under 400 pounds mostly steady, other steers were $3 to $8 lower with heifers $2 to $7 lower. True yearlings were not well tested. The mood at the stockyards was very somber as a life-taking tornado struck Joplin Sunday evening, causing total destruction and numerous deaths. Buyers helped one family that was connected to the stockyards by auctioning a heifer several times over to raise money for the family that had lost everything but their lives in the tornado. The generosity of everyone raised $10,000 for the family. Demand was light to moderate, and supply light. Feeder offerings included around 57% steers and bulls, 43% heifers, with 37% of the offerings over 600 pounds.
