Thomas Clark, Wytheville, Va., has been awarded the prestigious World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation's Golden Book Award. The American Simmental Association added Clark to the list of prestigious winners at their annual meeting on Jan. 16, in Denver, Colo.
Clark was born and raised on a Hereford cattle farm near Charlottesville and attended Virginia Tech. He served two years with the US Army before earning his degree. While in school, he competed on the livestock judging team and went on to work in Extension after graduating. He later earned a Master's Degree from Mississippi State University and went to work for the Virginia Animal Breeders Association. He married Ruth, and they settled down in Wytheville, where they began their Simmental operation, along with Ruth's father.
The Clarks have been active in the Virginia Bull Test Stations, and have consigned more station-winning bulls than other Simmental operation in the state. They were selected as the Virginia Seedstock Producer of the year in 1992, and Virginia Cattleman of the Year in 2005.
"I am very honored," Clark said, "I would like to publicly thank the ASA Board, not only for selecting Ruth and me for this recognition, but for all the work they do on behalf of Simmental breeders everywhere."
The World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation Golden Book Award recognizes individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the development of the Simmental/Simbrah breeds in the United States. The ASA Board, which nominates and approves Golden Book Awards, authorizes up to three awards annually. Recipients of the award receive a plaque from the WSFF and a framed citation signed by the ASA Chairman of the Board. The coveted award is the ASA equivalent of nomination to Hall-of-Fame status.
The American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, Montana, and maintains the breed registries for the Simmental and Simbrah breeds of cattle. ASA has an active adult and junior membership of nearly 5,000.
